Net Worth: Calculate Your Worth (And Richest Man, Woman and Companies)

Your Net Worth

The net worth section of the Buy Shares In website is where we showcase the richest companies and celebrities. We have done things a little differently in branching away from stocks and shares, but as this is a subject that everyone seems to be interested in, and one that can also help you to make a decision about investing in a particular stock, we’re keeping your money in mind.

Net Worth

So, just what is a net worth? Well, it is the amount that you arrive at when you calculate total assets and subtract liabilities. It is an amount that we all have and one that is also used to determine the value of a company.

It’s not reserved for prosperous celebrities like Tyler Perry, poker players like Phil Helmuth and sports stars like Gennady Golovkin. They are certainly the ones that the general public is interested in learning about the most, but we all have net worths.

Speaking of which, just how do you calculate your own net worth?

How do you Figure Out Your Net Worth?

Calculate Your Net Worth

To calculate your net worth, you just need to add-up your assets. Begin by focusing on the houses and cars that you own, as well as any money that you have tied up in businesses. You don’t need multiple vacation homes for this and you can simply calculate the value of a single house and car if that’s what you have.

You also need to add the cost of tangible investments such as art; luxury goods such as expensive jewelry and watches; and any furniture and furnishings you own. Once you have a figure from all of this, then you need to start calculating your investments.

These can include stocks and shares, whether you own a little Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) stock or a lot of Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) stock; and business interests. Bonds, mutual funds, checking accounts, savings accounts and other cash investments also need to be added.

The final step is to deduct liabilities. This is when it starts to hurt a little and when you realize your net worth is not as high as you first thought. Your liabilities include mortgage amounts, loans, credit cards and other debts.

Don’t worry if all of this amounts to very little or even to a minus figure. You’re not alone. But to inspire you towards a little more success, take a look at the following rich people and companies.

Richest Company in the World

Based on revenue, Walmart (NYSE: WMT), is the largest company in the world. This vast retailer powerhouse controls the market in the United States and it also has a large share of the market in the United Kingdom through its ownership of ASDA.

One of the largest private companies is SpaceX, which is controlled by Elon Must, the genius behind projects like SolarCity. Apple are also regularly ranked in the top ten richest companies in the world. American companies account for roughly 50% of all richest companies in the top 20, but at the time of writing 3 of the top 4 are based in China.

Richest Man in the World

Richest Man in the World

We mentioned Elon Musk above, and he is actually one of the richest men in the world. But he’s not quite number 1. That goes to the former Microsoft man Bill Gates. After that comes the owner of Amazon, Jeff Bezos. These two both have a net worth of more than $80 billion, an amount that many small countries would be envious of.

Also high up on the list of richest men is Mark Zuckerberg, who is the proud owner of Facebook (NASDAQ: FB), the biggest social network in the world and a media powerhouse that also owns both WhatsApp and Instagram. Because a lot of this wealth is based on the success of companies trading on the stock market, they often change places.

In 2017, Jeff Bezos passed Bill Gates as the richest man in the world, for instance, but it only lasted for a couple of days. If Amazon were to suffer a slump, with their shares nosediving and the market losing interest, and if the opposite were to happen to Facebook, then Zuckerberg could just as easily leap frog Bezos.

Richest Woman in the World

The richest woman in the world is Liliane Bettencourt, who owns the L’Oreal company. The Frenchwoman is is her mid-90s and has had plenty of time to enjoy her vast wealth, but at just under $40 billion, she has a long way to go before she catches Bill Gates.

And just like Bill Gates, there are a few people waiting close behind Bettencourt to take her top spot. The daughter of the Walmart owner is actually in second place, showing just how wealthy the Walmart family is.

As for Gates, while he no longer pursues such an active role in Microsoft, he is still on the board and he also has money invested in other projects. Gates is also part of a project where billionaires aim to donate large chunks of their money to those in need.

Richest Family in the World

Richest Family in the World

The Walmart family are definitely one of the richest families in the world, but they are not quite rich enough to take the top spot. That would go to The House of Saud, who control Saudi Arabia. Their wealth exceeds $1 trillion, which is money that would knock even Bill Gates off his perch. However, this is spread between a number of family members and it is also heavily reliant on their oil wealth, which is very unstable.

As you might expect, the Rothschilds are also high on this list, just behind the Saudi family. They have been one of the richest families in America since the beginning and more or less control the banking industry in this country. The Walton family, who own the Walmart chain, are usually placed third on this list, as are the family that proudly own the Mars Inc brand.

All of the money in the world and all of the candy you can eat, talk about a dream come true!
